Leslie Sheryll
This startling 19th-century tintype inspired me to create a narrative using text taken directly from the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization ruling which overturned Roe v. Wade. Abortion had been legal throughout most of the 19th century until the Comstock Act of 1873 made it illegal. It took Roe vs Wade, one hundred years later, to reverse that law. Once again, the right to a safe, legal abortion has been unfairly ripped away from half of the women in this country. We cannot afford to go back to an era when women have no control over their own bodies.
