Laura Larson

Bio

Laura Larson is a photographer and writer based in Columbus, OH. She’s published two books with Saint Lucy Books: Hidden Mother (2017), which was shortlisted for the Aperture-Paris Photo First Photo Book Prize; and City of Incurable Women (2022). She is currently at work on a collaborative book project with writer Christine Hume, All the Women I Know.

All the Women I Know is an on-going project, an archive of portraits representing a range of relationships in my life from intimates to acquaintances. Each woman is photographed with her back to the camera, a gesture at odds within the conventions of portraiture. The project explores what it means to resist representation, to turn away from the camera, and the significance of this gesture of refusal when depicting a woman. All the Women I Know contemplates connection: personal and political; familial and strategic; ties of affinity and of chance, mapping a constellation of possible relationships between the individual and the collective.
